Keeping Your Dog Safe During Hot Weather Exercise

As temperatures rise, it’s important to adjust how we care for our canine companions—especially when it comes to exercise. While dogs need regular physical activity to stay healthy and happy, warm weather can quickly turn a walk or run into a dangerous situation. Here’s what every pet owner should keep in mind:

1. Walk Early or Late

Avoid the midday heat. Opt for early morning or late evening walks when temperatures are cooler and the pavement isn't scorching hot. Hot surfaces can burn your dog’s paws and increase the risk of overheating.

2. Check the Pavement

A simple test: place the back of your hand on the ground for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for your skin, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

3. Hydration is Key

Bring water for both you and your dog. Portable pet water bottles or collapsible bowls make it easy to keep them hydrated on the go.

4. Watch for Signs of Heatstroke

Excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or wobbling are red flags. If you see these symptoms, stop all activity, move your dog to a cool place, and contact your vet immediately.

5. Adjust Intensity

Skip the intense games or long runs in hot weather. Instead, try indoor enrichment activities or short walks in shaded areas.

6. Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car

Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can soar dangerously high within minutes.

7. Consider the Breed

Flat-faced breeds like Bulldogs and Pugs, elderly dogs, and those with medical conditions are especially vulnerable to heat. Keep their activity low-key and monitor them closely.

8. Use Cooling Gear

Cooling vests, bandanas, and mats can help regulate your dog’s body temperature. Just be sure to use them properly and not rely on them solely.

9. Offer Shade

If you’re outside for an extended time, make sure there’s a shady area where your dog can rest and cool down.

Stay Smart, Stay Cool!

Exercising your dog in hot weather requires a little extra planning—but it’s worth it to keep your best friend safe, healthy, and happy. When in doubt, opt for indoor play and save those long walks for cooler days.

with the education we have given them,

in the environment we put them in."
